Self-aligning Adapter/Components for Prosthetic Legs

Need

  • More than 50% of amputees have mis-aligned prosthetics
  • Decreased mobility, Associated pain, Labored and abnormal walking style
  • In severe cases, double amputation
  • Current alignment process needs repeated prosthetist intervention, resulting in clinical time and cost
  • Robotic prosthetics with micro-processors are complex and expensive (>$15,000)

Challenges

  • Alignment process for passive prosthetics needs repeated prosthetist intervention, resulting in clinical time and cost
  • Robotic prosthetics with micro-processors are complex and expensive (>$15,000)

Our Technology

Our technology is a ‘self-aligning adapter’ that obviates the need for manual alignment. It is an add-on component that aligns itself in a way that reduces the effects of misalignment without prosthetist care. This unique feature helps reduce the complexity and subjectivity in manual alignment. The product is passive and functions in all planes of gait in real-time. Our designs are assembly-free (one-component) items and thus ready for 3D printing. In addition, our self-aligning product will save significant amount of time that the patients and prosthetists need to go through for the adaptation process in repeat visits.
